Texas Rangers Notes: Team Trying To Improve Bullpen, Purchase Contract Of Anthony Bass

Anthony Bass was called up from the Triple-A to aid in Jeff Banister’s disastrous bullpen, while Mike Hauschild was designated for assignment.

Anthony Bass will make his return to the MLB after a two-year absence, as reported by the Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant. The righty will take Mike Hauschild’s place in the bullpen as the latter was designated for assignment as soon as the move was confirmed.

The 27-year-old Hauschild pitched in four games before getting cut and they were forgettable. Hauschield allowed 10 runs on 14 hits across eight innings, while conceding five home runs and walking two batters. He recorded seven strikeouts, finishing with a 11.25 ERA. Because he was a Rule V draft pick, the Rangers now have 10 days to trade, release or waive him, so if he clears waivers, the team has to offer him back to the Houston Astros for $50,000.

Bass, on the contrary, has had three magnificent presentations as a reliever this season in the minor leagues. He hasn’t allowed a single run in 8 and 1/3 innings, as he's stuck out 16 batters at the Triple-A level, a success he hopes to carry on into the Rangers bullpen currently in shambles.

The Rangers' bullpen — excluding tonight's game — currently has a 5.89 ERA, as their opponents are hitting .292 with an .858 OPS, including 10 home runs allowed, the same amount that the team's starters have allowed in almost twice as many innings played. The bullpen has wasted five of six save chances to open up the season, in three of which Sam Dyson is to blame.

Dyson, who currently takes a spot in the 10-day disabled list after suffering a hand contusion, has conceded a horrific 13 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, just six less runs conceded than in all of what he allowed in 70 and 1/3 innings in 2016.

Only José Leclerc, Alex Claudio and Jeremy Jeffress could be absolved of any blame in the Rangers’ catastrophic bullpen debacle. Texas will certainly be looking forward to having Bass as a new addition to their bullpen as they aim to turn their season around.
