Physical Description

To say Montgomery has a thick frame would be an understatement. He's a bit soft in the midsection and it will be something he'll need to get on top of at the professional level. He has a naturally wide, strong frame, but conditioning needs to be a high priority. It may even help him velocity wise to gain some athleticism and get more lean.

Montgomery's delivery is very under control and paced well. He works from a high three-quarter angle and gets out in font nicely. Repeating is not a big problem for him, but using his strong lower half is something he could do more effectively.

His game is based around power, but the location of Montgomery's fastball is also impressive. He works at 91-93 mph, and has gotten it up to 94-95 in the past. The fastball has some late life to it, and he knows his fastball has enough on it to pitch aggressively in the strike zone.

His slider is potential plus pitch and he flashes above average currently. He throws it at 77-81 mph with some good, late dot and drop action. It's spotted on the plate when he needs to and he's also willing to bury it when he gets up in the count.

Montgomery doesn't show many of these but has mixed a couple occasionally at 80-81 mph. It will need to be developed further at the pro level.

Conditioning is a major issue teams will need to consider with Montgomery. But, he has two potential plus pitches currently and has an advanced feel for pitch.
