Physical Description

Mahtook is a strong, solidly built athlete. He has about an average size natural frame but is well conditioned with a particularly strong upper body. Physically this is about where he'll be long term.

His swing is a little bit unconventional and not always a thing of beauty. Mahtook just has a knack for hitting, though. The swing is short, compact and he stays off his front foot very well. He has a line drive approach and drives the ball with authority to the middle of the diamond. He uses his hands well and has the bat speed to stay back and go with off speed pitches to the opposite field. The feel for hitting with Mahtook is well above average.

Mahtook's natural swing path is not geared towards hitting the ball in the air. But, he has the strength to hit the ball out of the park to the middle of the field and to his pull side. He's a potential 20 home run threat in the big leagues.

Mahtook is about a 60 runner on the 20-80 scale and figures to remained there as a big leaguer. He's a smart base runner and could swipe 20-25 bases at the big league level.

There's a question regarding whether Mahtook can play center field at the Major League level. He probably can, but he'd be an elite defender in right field. He has a plus throwing arm and gets outstanding jumps. In center he'd be a fringe-average defender, but would be a plus defender in right.

Mahtook is a superb combination of plus physical tools and a feel for the game. He's advanced at the plate and falls under the category of a "gritty" type of player. You put those two together, as well as a track record of college success, and Mahtook will be off the board somewhere in the top 15 picks.
