Physical Description

Gilmartin is an above average athlete that has a lot of experience as a position player as well. He fields his position well and will always be one of the most athletic players on the field. He has an average size frame with a strong, long lower half. Gilmartin has a well proportioned, good pitcher's frame overall with some room to grow.

Gilmartin is very clean and polished mechanically. He works from a full windup, has a high leg kick and stays on top with consistency. Mechanically he shares some similarities with Andy Pettitte. He repeats exceptionally well and his mechanics are the biggest reason for his plus command.

He's not overpowering, but he has some good life on the fastball with two-seam movement. He'll work steadily at 88-91 mph, and bumps it up to 92-93 now and then. In other words, he'll work with about an average fastball as a big leaguer. The command of the fastball is what sets him apart, however. He gets on top nicely and lives on the lower outside corners of the plate.

Gilmartin relies on his secondary offerings and his curveball is a big part of his attack. It's a plus pitch with sharp, 12-6 action. It comes in anywhere from 74-78 mph and he spots it well, even when he's behind in the count. This is a swing and miss offering, particularly against lefty hitters.

The changeup is another pitch that flashes above average for Gilmartin and makes him one of this class' most complete pitchers. He'll go to it in just about any count and throws it at 78-80 mph. He has a plus feel for this and the arm action on it is outstanding.

Gilmartin has just about everything you look for in a college pitcher aside from plus velocity. He has two potential above average secondary pitches and locates all three of his pitches at a better than average clip. He'll make a strong number three starter at the big league level.
