Scouting Playoff Pitchers: Jeremy Hellickson

Starting pitchers are perhaps the biggest factor in whether a team succeeds in the postseason. For that reason, some of the most detailed scouting reports are compiled on these opposing starters. Here's a look at what playoff opponents will see from Rays' starter, Jeremy Hellickson.

Fastball: 90-94 MPH
Changeup: 80-82 MPH
Curveball: 75-77 MPH
Cutter: 88-90 MPH

The Skinny: Like his fellow staff member James Shields, Hellickson's weapon of choice is definitely his changeup. When it's on, he's able to get some weak swings early in counts and it allows him to move through a lineup very efficiently. Hellickson's velocity also has a tendency to play up a tick or two because of the big differential on his changeup.

Hellickson's changeup movement also matches his fastball spin nicely, and that's what makes it such a tough pitch. He'll also cut his fastball now and then, which is just another wrinkle to keep hitters off his plus changeup.
