Scouting Playoff Pitchers: Cliff Lee

Starting pitchers are perhaps the biggest factor in whether a team succeeds in the postseason. For that reason, some of the most detailed scouting reports are compiled on these opposing starters. Here's a look at what playoff opponents will see from Phillies' lefty, Cliff Lee.

Fastball: 90-94 MPH
Cutter: 85-88 MPH
Changeup: 82-85 MPH
Curveball: 74-77 MPH

The Skinny: Cliff Lee is one of the true four pitch pitchers in baseball today. By that I mean he has four pitches and he uses every last one of them to carve up a lineup. And, each one of those offerings is a better than average pitch. Lee will work both sides of the plate with his breaking stuff to righties and likes to sneak the fastball on the inside corner.

His command of his big, slow curveball sets him apart from most pitchers and makes him incredibly unpredictable. His cutter is probably his most effective weapon, however, and he's able to use it consistently against lefties and righties. If you're going to get to Lee you need to look for a poorly located breaking ball early in the count. He'll often do that to get ahead in the count. If he's allowed that luxury he'll cruise all night.
