Scouting Report

Gerrit Cole's raw stuff is no secret and there's a reason he was the number one overall pick in 2011. And, nothing has changed in the AFL. Cole is working at 95-99 mph with his fastball and bumps 100 mph routinely. What continues to be surprising about Cole, however, is how often hitters square up his explosive, moving fastball. The key for him is going to be improved command and perhaps not being as reckless early in counts with his fastball.

Cole's secondary pitches are nearly as impressive as his fastball. He shows off a plus changeup at 88-90 mph with big fading action. He also mixes a plus-plus slider at 89-91 mph. Both of these offerings are true swing and miss type offerings. While Cole isn't wild by any means, he just needs to tweak his command within the strike zone and avoid mistakes early in counts.
