AFL Scouting Report: Murphy Smith

Scouting reports are the foundation of the talent evaluation system, and clubs don't stop scouting players once they enter the pros. As part of our Arizona Fall League coverage here at Scout.com, we'll be providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on prospects from around the league. Scouting Report

Smith relies almost entirely on his command, and particularly the command of his secondary pitches. His stuff is fringe to average across the board and doesn't have the arsenal to make hitters swing and miss. His fastball sits at 88-91 mph and tops out around 92. He has some good life through the zone and two-seam movement as well. But, it's a still a pitch that when he leaves it up he gets hit very hard.

Smith also mixes in a big curveball that flashes average action at 78-81 mph. He locates it well, but again needs to be very fine with his command because it's an easy pitch to read out of the hand. His changeup is a little behind his other pitches at least in terms of command. He throws it at 80-82 mph, so the differential is there but he's not spotting it against lefty hitters. And, those lefty hitters are a big issue for him.
