Blue Jays Pay High Price For Santos

DALLAS, Texas -- There are some deals where both teams are likely to come away happy. Sergio Santos for Nestor Molina could be one of those deals in the short term. However, if there's going to be a long term winner in the trade it just may be the Chicago White Sox.

The Blue Jays came to the winter meetings in search of a closer. On Tuesday, they got what they came for by landing flame throwing right-hander Sergio Santos. Santos can be erratic with his control at times, so despite his electric stuff, closing games against tough AL East competition may be somewhat of adventure for him and the Jays.

There's no doubt that Toronto is pleased with the high quality arm they were able to obtain, but if you're the Chicago White Sox you have to be ecstatic with what you received in return. For Santos, Toronto sent the Chisox a blue chip pitching prospect in righty, Nestor Molina. Toronto now has a very deep system and can afford to part with an arm like this, but the loss still has to sting a little.

Every talent evaluator likes a starting pitcher who can miss bats. Molina does just that. Armed with an 90-94 sinking fastball, a quality breaking ball, and plus swing and miss splitter, he has the type of stuff that will miss bats in the big leagues as well. Again, if there's a long term winner in this deal, it may be Chicago. Molina has the upside of a stronger number two type starter.
