Scouting Prospect #55: Randall Delgado

We recently released our annual top 100 prospects list here at, and to follow that up we will be providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on select prospects from that list over the course of the off-season. Here's a scouting report on prospect #55 from that list, Randall Delgado.

Name: Randall Delgado
Position: Pitcher
Team: Atlanta Braves
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 200
Bats/Throws: R/R

Event Scouted: MiLB Season

Physical Description

Delgado is very strongly built and well proportioned. He has a strong lower half, which he uses well in his delivery. He's also a better than average athlete and moves around the mound quite well for a big guy.

Delgado works at 92-94 mph with his fastball, reaching 95 a handful of times in any given outing. It shows some late life through the zone, and it appears to be by design that he tends to stay out of the upper quadrants of the zone.

Thrown at 78-84 mph, you could make the case that some of Delgado's breaking balls resemble slider action more so than a curveball. Regardless of that, it's an impressive swing and miss pitch for him and mixes it in more and more later in outings. He likes to start this pitch at the hip of righty hitters and bring it back to the inside corner. He does make a few mistakes up and out over the plate that, however, and he won't get away with those for long in the big leagues.

Delgado works early and often with his changeup, which now grades out as a clear plus offering. He threw his changeup at 80-84 mph, showing good diving action away from left-handed batters. The righty is now able to throw this pitch early in counts as well as late in counts to finish hitters off, so the conviction and confidence to go to it in any situation is definitely there.

Randall Delgado has the type of stuff that profiles near the front of a big league rotation. He has decent command, but it will never be his calling card. Right now, he appears to profile as a good number two starter in the big leagues.
