Scouting Prospect #22: Jean Segura

We recently released our annual top 100 prospects list here at, and to follow that up we will be providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on select prospects from that list over the course of the off-season. Here's a scouting report on prospect #22 from that list, Jean Segura.

Name: Jean Segura
Position: Shortstop
Team: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 160
Bats/Throws: R/R

Events Scouted: Arizona Fall League

Physical Description

He's not a large guy, but Segura is an outstanding, plus athlete. He has fast twitch actions and will always be one of the most athletic, well conditioned players on the field.

The hit tool is what it's all about with Segura. His plate discipline is improving, but his ability to stay short to the ball and drive the ball to all parts of the field are what have had scouts raving for a couple years now. He's going to be a hit machine at the next level. This is a potential consistent .300 hitter and his approach only figures to get better as he matures.

Right now, Segura's swing is not designed to hit the long ball. But, he has the plus bat speed and jump off his bat to eventually learn to hit the ball out. His swing is geared toward line drives and hitting the ball on the ground currently, but in time he could be a 15-20 home run threat.

Segura is a plus runner. He grades out about a 60 on the 20-80 scale. He also appears to have good enough instincts on the bases to steal 20-30 bases annually.

Segura has not gotten to this stage as prospect on the strength of his defense. There's some doubt as to whether he can play shortstop long term, but he's had his problems playing second base as well. We'll just need to wait and see if he gains more consistency. He does have the physical skills to be a good defender, including a plus throwing arm.

What you're looking for from Segura is a guy who has a chance to hit for a very high average in the big leagues. His hit tool is outstanding, and once he's on the bases he can do damage there as well. He's also a high octane style player that figures to bring excitement just with his attitude. But, his position and overall defensive ability are question marks right now, as his ability to stay on the field.
