2012 Draft Scouting Report: Damien Magnifico

Scouting reports are the foundation of the talent evaluation system, and the reports that are used on draft day are developed from multiple viewings over the course of a player's amateur career. As part of our 2012 draft coverage here at Scout.com, we'll be providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on the names you need to know on draft day. Here's a look at pitcher, Damien Magnifico.

Physical Description

Magnifico is a highly athletic pitcher. He's well built and has a strong lower half. He may add some upper body bulk as he matures, but for the most part his current frame will remain the same through the years.

The delivery is where there are some issues for Magnifico. He tends to get a little uphill at times and currently lacks consistently with his release point because of that. His arm action isn't perfect either. But, the big issue is consistency and being able to repeat well enough to throw a steady diet of strikes.

The fastball is the major reason why Magnifico will be a very high draft pick come June. He works at 94-97 mph, getting as high as 99 mph last summer in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. There is some effort to it, but it has explosive life through the zone and will miss bats at any level. Command is an issue, however.

The secondary stuff is where issues begin to come up with Magnifico. He flashes plus bite on a curveball at 75-78 mph, but the command just isn't there on a consistent basis. It stays up in the zone and that's when we see him hit harder than his stuff indicates he has any right to be hit.

The changeup is not a big part of Magnifico's game right now. And, it may not need to be considering his future is likely in the bullpen. But, he will need to show it a little more often this spring.

Barring some major developments with his secondary pitches, Magnifico is probably a relief pitcher as a pro. But, with reports already of Magnifico's fastball reaching triple digits heading into this spring, he looks like a potential closer at the next level. He's coming off arm surgery and we're likely to see his command as well as his velocity continue to improve. With that said, if he has a strong spring he'll have some helium in June.
