2012 Draft Scouting Report: James Ramsey

Scouting reports are the foundation of the talent evaluation system, and the reports that are used on draft day are developed from multiple viewings over the course of an amateur career. As part of our 2012 draft coverage here at Scout.com, we're providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on the names you need to know on draft day. Here's a look at college outfielder, James Ramsey.

Name: James Ramsey
Position: Outfield
School: Florida State
Height: 6 feet
Weight: 190
Bats/Throws: L/R

Events Scouted: Cape Cod League

Physical Description

Ramsey is a stocky, strongly built athlete. He may not have the size of the traditional corner outfielder in the big leagues but the strength is clearly there.

Although he's been called unorthodox, the results just continue to be there for Ramsey. He's thrived with the wooden bat and he has handled top notch pitching. And, he has a swing that produces outstanding lift as he stays on his back leg nicely.

He doesn't have the physical size of a power hitter, but as already stated he has a swing designed to hit for power as a professional. He appears to have 20-25 home run type power potential at the next level.

Ramsey's above average wheels give him plus range in a corner outfield spot. He's highly athletic and should be an asset defensively as a pro, given that and his solid arm strength.

An above average runner, Ramsey will make his presence known on the base paths at the next level. Base stealing may not be a huge part of his game, but he'll feature the skill at times.

It's simply taken a little while for this senior's skills to be fully appreciated. He's proven all he can at the college level when it comes to swinging the bat, and he has the style to make it work as a professional as well.
