2012 Draft Scouting Report: Wales Toney

Scouting reports are the foundation of the talent evaluation system, and the reports that are used on draft day are developed from multiple viewings over the course of an amateur career. As part of our 2012 draft coverage here at Scout.com, we're providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on the names you need to know on draft day. Here's a look at prep pitcher, Wales Toney.

Physical Description

Toney is a strong, well proportioned athlete. There's some room to grow, but he's more physically mature than some other high school arms.

The loose arm action stands out in Toney's delivery. He gets good extension out front and has a pretty consistent finish.

There's probably another tick or two on the way on Toney's fastball. He currently sits around 90-91, bumping 92 at times. His command is solid and keeps the ball down in the zone quite well.

Toney's curveball is going to need some work. There's a lack of feel right now, as well as a lack of consistent bite. He throws it at 71-73 mph, so throwing it a little harder would be a good start.

Toney tends to telegraph his changeup. He needs to get his arm speed up if he's going to fool professional hitters. He throws it at 76-80 mph.

Wales Toney has a very lively, loose arm, and that will get him off the board most likely in the top ten rounds. But, the secondaries are a major work in progress.
