Scouting Tyler Matzek

Tyler Matzek has found his way in 2012. Following a rocky 2011 season, the talented southpaw has made some strides in the command department in High-A and the Rockies are now beginning to get a glimpse of the talent that made Matzek a first round pick in 2009.

Position: Pitcher
Organization: Colorado Rockies
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 210
Bats/Throws: L/L
Event Scouted: High-A All-Star Game

Expert's Take:

It's clear from some of the inconsistencies in his mechanics why Matzek has had some very serious command problems. His stride length and landing foot have become more consistent, but he definitely has some work to do in this department. His fastball command is not something Matzek can be real confident in right now, and it leads to mistakes in and out of the strike zone. He especially has a tendency to miss up and away to his arm side.

In the pure stuff department, Matzek gives scouts a lot of reasons to remain patient with him despite his currently poor control. He worked at 92-94 mph with his fastball when I had the opportunity to see him, and touched 95 fairly easily. He didn't showcase much movement on his fastball, however, so his location is going to have to improve.

Matzek also mixed in a plus slider at 84-85 mph and a quality curveball at 77 mph. These two secondary pitches give Matzek the potential to have a superb arsenal with at least two plus offerings. But, his command and mechanics are going to have to continue making strides.

Scout Quote:

"You could say his command has gotten better this year, but he has a lot to work on still. His fastball is in the middle of the plate too much and he needs to get in better counts to use that plus breaking ball. You can see what he might be someday but we'll have to see a lot more consistency."

Ceiling: #3 Starter (6)
