Last week, we named an Oakland Athletic the Scout.com Player of the Week, and the Swingin' A's make it two in a row this week, thanks to the bat of first baseman Brandon Moss.
Yes, the 29-year old infielder is having one of the poorer seasons (batting average-wise) of his career (hitting .249), but over the past seven days, Moss and the resurgent Athletics have reminded the baseball world just why they were one of the best teams in the bigs during the first half of the season.
Starting with an 8-6 win over the Detroit Tigers in the Motor City in which Moss went 1-for-3 with two walks, Moss has hit in five of the last seven games, scoring eight runs, popping four home runs and driving in 11.
Moss has led the majors in OPS (1.455), slugging (.955), homers and RBIs over the past seven days, ranking second in the big leagues in runs.
As Oakland ripped off six wins in seven days – interrupted rudely by the Tigers, who swiped a 7-6 win on Aug. 29 in Detroit – to pull to within one game of AL West-leading Texas, Moss hit a robust .364 (8-for-22). Over his last 10 games, Moss has ripped seven homers and driven in 14.
Moss's biggest game came in a 14-4 route of the Tigers on Aug. 28, in which the 6-foot, 210-pound lefty stick swatted two dingers and a double, going 4-for-5 with three runs and six RBIs.
