Player of the Week: Evan Longoria

Tampa Bay third baseman takes home second Player of the Week award as the regular season comes to a close.

Appropriately enough, it's a Tampa Bay Ray that earns the final Player of the Week award for the 2013 season, as the Rays downed the Texas Rangers, 5-2, on Monday to squeak into the playoffs.

Evan Longoria led the Major Leagues in homers over the final week-plus-one of the season (3), while also pacing all big leaguers in RBIs (11), hitting .375 (12-for-32) and scoring eight runs (second in the bigs).

Tampa Bay went 5-2 leading into Monday's victory in Arlington, Tex., with Longoria going 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, a home run and two RBIs in the one-game playoff.

Longoria finished the season with 32 homers and 91 runs scored and 88 RBIs, narrowly missing his second 30-100-100 season, which would have been his first since 2009.

It was Longoria's two-run, tie-breaking shot dealt a death blow to the Rangers, who came into Game 163 having won their past seven games. Tampa Bay got an extra insurance run in the seventh thanks to a sacrifice fly by Delmon Young, who returned to the Rays as a free agent on Aug. 22 after being taken by Tampa Bay with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft.
