The first week of the 2014 Major League Baseball season saw no fewer than five candidates for the Scout.com Player of the Week, what with Colorado's Charlie Blackmon hitting a scorching .542, San Francisco's Brandon Belt belting four home runs, Arizona's Mark Trumbo's stellar start for the Diamondbacks (6 R, .346, 4 HR, 9 RBI) and Minnesota's Chris Colabello starting off with 11 RBIs, four doubles, a 1.112 OPS and a .391 batting average over the first week of the season.
Giancarlo Stanton, who powered the surprising Miami Marlins to a 5-2 record and first place in the National League East.
Stanton went 10-for-29 over the first seven games of the season (.345), with two home runs, three doubles, a .406 on-base percentage, a .655 slugging percentage and a 1.061 OPS.
Most significantly, Stanton led the majors in runs (7) and was second in RBIs (12). Stanton alone is responsible for 17 of Miami's 19 total runs – a total that ranks second in all of Major League Baseball over the first week of the season.
Stanton has tallied at least one base hit in all but one of the first seven games, notching multi-hit days four times. He's driven in at least one run in each of the first seven games, driving in more than one run on five occasions. Stanton scored at least one run in each of the first five games, and he's even thrown in two stolen bases on two attempts, for good measure.
