Scout Hot Sheet May 19-25: Adam Wainwright

Adam Wainwright becomes the first pitcher to be named Player of the Week for this season, despite anything Josh Beckett has to say about it.

Plenty of hitters have stood out over the past week, what with Adrian Beltre and Yasiel Puig both hitting .522 and Chris Davis and Justin Upton each driving in 10 runs with averages over .390, but this week belongs to our first hurler to earn the Scout Player of the Week award for 2014: The St. Louis Cardinals' Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright has worked 17.0 innings in two starts over the past seven days, going 2-0 with a 000 ERA and not even so much as an unearned run allowed.

Wainwright scattered six hits across those 17.0 innings of work, walking just one and striking out 21 for a staggeringly pathetic .107 batting average against – the fifth-best among starters over the past seven days behind guys named Kershaw, Weaver and Wacha.

Wainwright's 21:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio is the best in both leagues by a wide margin, and he's only needed a total of 232 pitches – or just four pitches per batter – to spin his two masterpieces.

The 6-foot-7 veteran righty hasn't just been dominant over the past week -- scoring a complete-game win over Arizona (allowing one hit and striking out nine) and striking out 12 Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in 8.0 innings – but really since the beginning of the month.

Since the calendar turned, he's 3-1 and has only gone less than eight innings twice in five starts. Since his May 2 loss to the Chicago Cubs, when he allowed six earned runs on 10 hits in just 5.0 innings, Wainwright has gone 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA in four starts for the reigning NL champions, who sit 1.5 games back in the NL Central, behind 30-21 Milwaukee.
