Scout Hot Sheet July 14-July 20: Mike Trout

Mike Trout starts the week off with an All-Star Game MVP award and keeps on chugging at the expense of Fernando Rodney and the Seattle Mariners.

Mike Trout had an OK week. He only won the All-Star Game MVP with a 2-for-3, two-RBI performance, including a run and a triple, and then, because he was just feeling maybe too bored with raking against the game’s best, he went 6-for-16 in the weekend series against the resurgent Mariners, chalking a home run, a walk, four runs scored and three doubles.

Oh, and he also got his Green Arrow on against Seattle closer Fernando Rodney on Sunday, with a little help from Albert Pujols.

After Rodney – called upon to make a five-out save – got Kole Calhoun to fly out to center to end the bottom of the eighth, he hit the Angels dugout with a little lightning, his normal post-save routine. The Halos, to put it mildly, were less than pleased.

Enter: Trout and Pujols. Trout took a leadoff walk in bottom of the ninth, coming around to score from first on a Pujols double to right. After Trout scored, he fired a pantomimed arrow toward the middle of the diamond, and Pujols responded in kind, in effect giving Rodney figurative twin arrows through the heart.

On Friday, Trout secured the first win of the series, rattling a one-out double in the bottom of the 16th before himself riding home on Efren Navarro’s walk-off two-bagger.

The Angels took the game, and the series, from the Mariners, who remain 9.0 games back of the Oakland Athletics, and 7.5 games back of the Angels.
