With college football finally kicking off this weekend, it’s fitting that former USC Trojan Lucas Duda took the shine off of Notre Dame grad Jeff Samardzija’s golden dome with a screaming, three-run, 400-foot-plus home run in the New York Mets’ 8-5 midweek win over the Oakland Athletics, kicking off his Player of the Week candidacy. While Duda may not have been quite as hot as Boston’s David Ortiz (11-for-17 with two home runs and two doubles over the past six games), he was more than five times as productive.
Duda went 8-for-23 over the past seven days, with five of those eight hits going over the wall – a figure that led the Majors. Duda’s 11 RBIs tied him for the Major League lead with Detroit’s Victor Martinez and Atlanta’s Justin Upton, both of whom played in one more game and had at least five more at-bats than Duda, who had 26 plate appearances to Martinez’s 33 and Upton’s 34.
Duda’s 23 total bases tied him for the big league lead with Colorado’s Nolan Arenado and Minnesota’s Danny Santana, while his seven runs scored tied him for fourth in the Majors.
While Duda’s batting average over the past seven days ranks him 43rd in the Major Leagues, his 1.000 slugging percentage ranks third, behind Arenado and Ortiz. Duda ranked fourth this past week in OPS, with a 1.385 mark.
Duda has hit safely in four of his past six games, with three of those games being of the multi-hit variety, including a 3-for-5, two-run, two-home run, five-RBI game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday to cement his first Player of the Week of the season.
