Scout Hot Sheet Sept. 1-7: Miguel Cabrera

Cabrera gets hot just when Tigers need him most down the stretch, leading the bigs in total bases, hits, runs and home runs over the past seven games.

This week’s Scout.com Player of the Week was a two-horse race, as the San Francisco GiantsBuster Posey continued his torrid fortnight, going a big-league-best 13-for--23 with eight runs, five extra-base hits and eight RBIs, making a very, very strong case for the weekly nod. But, the Detroit TigersMiguel Cabrera was just too productive, leading the Major Leagues in home runs (5), OPS (1.554), total bases (32), hits (15), extra-base hits (7) and runs (8).

Cabrera went 15-for-30 (.500) for the Motor City Kitties over the past seven days, driving in nine runs – good for third in the bigs, and second in the American League.

The Tigers first baseman helped lift Detroit to a series win over pesky Cleveland to start the week off, going 3-for-5 in the series opener, with four runs scored and three RBIs, as he cracked two home runs – a two-run job in the first inning to touch off what would be a 12-1 win, and a solo shot in the eighth. The next night, Cabrera went 3-for-5, but was pulled for a pinch runner in the ninth, two batters before J.D. Martinez launched his 19th home run of the year into the center field bushes against Indians closer Cody Allen, giving the Tigers a 4-2 win.

After dropping the first two games over the weekend to Posey and the Giants, with the San Francisco catcher going 5-for-8 with three runs, and a home run, Cabrera tallied his third straight two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, cracking a two-run homer in the third inning off of Tim Hudson to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead, which would turn into a 6-1 win.

The weekend series proved to be the capper for the PoTW race, with Posey finishing 5-for-10 with three runs, one RBI and one home run, while Cabrera went 6-for-12 with two runs, six RBIs and three home runs.
