Scout Hot Sheet Sept. 22-29: Gray and Reddick

Sonny Gray and Josh Reddick help lift the slumping Athletics into the playoffs, and a date with the Kansas City Royals in the Wild Card game.

The Oakland Athletics had been in a tailspin since the trading deadline, going from four games up on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Aug. 10, to 10 games back on the final day of the regular season.

The A’s needed a run at the very end of the regular season to sneak into the postseason, and thankfully for Oakland, Josh Reddick and Sonny Gray have a great sense of timing.

The A’s right fielder led all Major Leaguers over the past seven days in batting average (.480, 12-for-25), had the second-most RBIs (7), the second-most extra-base hits (4) and the most total bases (19). He also had four runs scored.

During the past seven days (six games for Oakland), Reddick had five multi-hit days, capping off the week with a 2-for-4 day in a must-win game against the surging Texas Rangers on Sunday, scoring one of his four runs on the week in the 4-0 road win. Reddick also kicked off the scoring on Sunday against the Rangers, tripling to center to plate Brandon Moss.

Reddick had that triple, one home run and two doubles over the past seven days, with one home run.

Gray went 1-1 with a 0.56 ERA, one shutout and 17 strikeouts in 16 innings, with six of those K’s coming on Sunday in seven innings during the win in Arlington. On Tuesday, Gray threw seven innings of three-hit ball with a career-high 12 strikeouts, but was the hard-luck loser as the Angels scored just one earned run – on a solo homer by Gordon Beckham -- in a 2-0 win down in Anaheim. Gray was tied for the Major League lead in innings pitched over the past week, and was third in strikeouts.
