Atlanta Braves catching prospect Brett Cumberland takes batting practice at Cal Pro Day

BERKELEY -- On Fri., Jan. 27, Cal's Major League alumni, as well as the recent MLB Draft picks, assembled on Evans Diamond for the Bears' Pro Day, including Atlanta Braves farmhand Brett Cumberland.

BERKELEY -- Former California catcher Brett Cumberland returned to his old stomping grounds at Evans Diamond on Friday to participate in the Bears' Pro Day, taking batting practice and reuniting with some of his compatriots on the current team, which begins the season on Feb. 17, with a three-game weekend series against Cal Poly.

Cumberland, drafted 76th overall by the Atlanta Braves this June, hit .216 in the Appalachian League (Rookie) this summer for the Danville Braves, slugging 11 doubles and three home runs, and driving in 30 runs, with 14 walks and 49 strikeouts. 

This past college season, Cumberland took home Pac-12 Player of the Year honors, hitting .344 with a conference-leading 16 home runs and 51 RBIs, slugging .678.
