GM Ken Williams said Friday that he does not expect to delve into the free agent market beyond this week's signing of outfielder Jermaine Dye. Most notably, Williams said that he probably cannot upgrade the starting pitching beyond its current state.
"We have a minimal amount of money left to add to the existing team," Williams said. "[But] the existing team is well-equipped to begin the season. I think we'd be well-represented."
The White Sox had higher goals for this free agency period, but several market impacts – the New York Mets' $22.5 million offering to Kris Benson was said to have artificially inflated the scene – have forced the South Siders to prepare with what they already have on board.
Williams said he was confident, among other items, that Willie Harris would continue to improve as a smart ballplayer, that manager Ozzie Guillen has a better idea of what Juan Uribe has to offer, and that Carl Everett would be kept in line (White Sox strength and conditioning coach Allen Thomas is ready to be dispatched to Florida later in the winter to check on the status of Everett's winter workouts).
Chicago would, however, be ready to improve its club via a trade, although that didn't appear likely on Friday. Williams spent most of the morning chatting in the hotel lobby with reporters, not GMs, and said that his meeting schedule was clear for the rest of the afternoon.
"The winter meetings, the first day is always still a feeling out process," Williams said. "By Saturday, some people might have some ideas. … I'd certainly be receptive if anybody offers some overtures that potentially would make us better."
