2010 TigsTown Awards: VSL Tigers

The 2010 season is now over, which means it's time to hand out the hardware! Who excelled as the VSL Tigers top pitcher and position player? Find out inside!

VSL Tigers Player of the Year: UT Eugenio Suarez

.311/.339/.396, 12 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 18 RBI, 8 SB

Despite being a second year player in the VSL, Suarez only turned 19-years old in mid-July. After a solid year in 2009, Suarez was one of the team's top overall players throughout the 2010 season. Suarez filled in wherever the Tigers needed defensively, seeing time in center field, left field, third base, and both up the middle infield slots. His versatility was invaluable to the VSL club this summer. In addition to his defensive contributions, Suarez was an offensive spark for a club that frequently struggled scoring runs. In 61 games, Suarez his .311, ranking 13th in the league. He also controlled the strike zone well, walking 23 times for an on-base percentage approaching .400. Though he is a good runner, Suarez only swiped eight bases as he continues to improve his instincts on the base paths. Overall, Suarez was an integral part of the VSL Tigers in 2010, and his versatility gives him a chance to come stateside at some point down the line.

VSL Tigers Pitcher of the Year: RHP Jose Tablante

1-2, 3.58 ERA, 37.2 IP, 33 K, 24 BB, .214 BAA

Tablante, an 18-year old right-hander, improved his numbers from what was a solid debut season in the VSL in 2009. Despite just a 1-2 record, Tablante notched a solid 3.58 ERA, working mostly in relief in his 15 appearances. In 37 2/3 innings, Tablante allowed just 30 hits and kept the ball in the yard the entire season. Though he did walk 24 hitters, he held the opposition to a .214 average against, and struck out 33. With his live right arm, Tablante has the potential to turn himself into a solid relief prospect, and his 2010 season was a step in that direction.
