According to numerous media reports including from Ignacio Serrano of ESPN Deportes and El Nacional, the Tigers and catcher Victor Martinez have agreed to a 4-year deal worth an estimated $50 million.
At this time, no confirmation had been provided from either side that a deal was in place, but according to multiple media reports citing off-the-record sources, the deal is expected to be completed.
Victor Martinez would be the second big free agent addition this off-season. The Tigers signed right-handed reliever Joaquin Benoit earlier this month to a three-year deal.
Martinez, a career .300 hitter, hit .302 in 2010 for Boston with 20 home runs and 79 RBI. He posted an .844 OPS.
