MiLB Recaps: Toledo Powered to Win by Thorman

May 17th Games

AAA Toledo Mud Hens - Toledo 8, Charlotte 3
20-20, 3rd in West Division

With another strong outing from Charlie Furbush, the Mud Hens picked up an 8-3 win over Charlotte on Tuesday. Furbush got the win to improve to 4-3 on the year, giving up two runs on five hits in six innings of work, with two walks and eight strikeouts. Matt Hoffman, Jose Ortega and Lester Oliveros each tossed an inning of relief to close the game up, with Ortega allowing the final run. At the plate, the long ball led the way, as Danny Worth got the Hens on the board in the first inning with a two run blast. Scott Thorman took it from there, going 3-for-5 with a double and two home runs, scoring three times and driving in four runs. Timo Perez also added three hits including a double and Will Rhymes reached base three times and scored twice.

AA Erie Seawolves - Erie 1, Trenton 0
17-19, t-4th in Western Division

Erie picked up a 1-0 shutout win over Trenton on Tuesday night behind some great pitching. Casey Crosby got the start and tossed six shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out three. Jared Gayhart got the win though for tossing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief despite walking three. Zach Simons earned a hold, and Chance Ruffin pitched the ninth for his fifth save. Bryan Holaday drove in Bryan Pounds for the club's only run. The offense managed just four singles, but that one run was enough on this day to pick up a win.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – Lakeland 10, Charlotte 1
20-19, 4th in North Division

The Flying Tigers also picked up a win on Tuesday, though there's wasn't nearly the battle that Erie had as they cruised to a 10-1 win. Jared Wesson got the start and picked the up win, tossing 6 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. Tyler Stohr allowed the only run in the ninth to prevent the shutout. Michael Morrison also tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Avisail Garcia had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a double and driving in four runs total. Tony Plagman and Jordan Lennerton also each added solo home runs and Michael Rockett had a double and a pair of runs driven in.

A West Michigan Whitecaps - West Michigan 6, Bowling Green 3
16-20, 6th in Eastern division

The Whitecaps picked up a win as well on Tuesday, topping Bowling Green 6-3. Jeff Ferrell got the start and took a no decision, giving up three runs in four innings of work before exiting. Patrick Cooper took over in relief and ended up earning the victory, tossing two scoreless innings. Logan Hoch matched that to pick up a hold, and Bruce Rondon allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth but closed things out without any damage to pick up his fifth save. Nick Castellanos and James Robbins each belted solo home runs at the plate, while Rob Brantly added a hit and a pair of RBI, and Steven Moya also ripped two doubles.

R VSL Tigers - Postponed: Rain
0-0, t-3rd in VSL

For the second straight day, the VSL Tigers were unable to complete their first game of the season as they were postponed due to rain. They're hoping that the third time will be the charm on Wednesday afternoon.
