MiLB Recaps: Hens, Erie Pick Up W's in Extras

May 21st Games

AAA Toledo Mud Hens - Toledo 5, Pawtucket 4 (11)
22-22, 3rd in West Division

The Mud Hens returned to the .500 mark on Saturday with a 5-4 win over Pawtucket in 11 innings. Thad Weber was the starter, giving four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings of work. Jose Ortega, Robbie Weinhardt and Lester Oliveros then combined to toss five shutout innings, with Oliveros earning the win. In the 11th, With Danny Worth on second, Ryan Strieby ripped a single to right field that scored Worth for the game winning run. Worth scored two runs for the game. Scott Thorman also had a big game, belting a three run homer, and Cale Iorg added a solo shot.

AA Erie Seawolves - Erie 3, Bowie 2 (12)
18-21, 6th in Western Division

Erie also picked up an extra inning win on Saturday, beating Bowie 3-2 in 12 innings. The 'Wolves loaded up the bases in the 12th after Jamie Johnson led off the inning with a double, and with him standing on third, a wild pitch allowed him to come home for the go-ahead and eventual game winning run. The extra innings of course meant that once again Jacob Turner didn't get a win despite pitching masterfully. Turner allowed two runs on five hits in eight innings of work, walking one and striking out eight. Chance Ruffin earned the win for tossing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief, giving up just one walk while striking out four. Johnson finished the game 3-for-6 with an RBI, and Audy Ciriaco also had two hits and a run driven in.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – Jupiter 4, Lakeland 2
21-22, 4th in North Division

Lakeland fell to Jupiter on Saturday night at Joker Marchant Stadium, losing 4-2. Cole Nelson got the start and took the loss but turned in a quality start, giving up three runs on six hits in six innings of work. He also walked one and struck out six. Michael Morrison gave up an insurance run to Jupiter in the eighth inning, the lone blemish on him in his 1 2/3 innings of work. Lakeland got two runs but went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Ryan Soares went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a run, and Michael Rockett drove in the club's other run.

A West Michigan Whitecaps - Fort Wayne 9, West Michigan 7
16-24, 8th in Eastern division

The Whitecaps put up a fight, but couldn't top Fort Wayne in a slugfest on Saturday, losing 9-7. Kyle Ryan got the start and took a no decision, giving up five runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. Michael Torrealba got the loss, giving up three runs, all unearned in his 1 1/3 innings of work. Dan Gentzler yielded the final run in his two innings to complete the scoring. The Whitecaps entered the ninth down three, but got a run via a Luis Castillo single, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Hernan Perez lined out to end the threat and the game. Perez did finish 2-for-5 with a double and two runs driven in though. James Robbins also added another solo home run and scored twice, while Steven Moya had two hits including a triple and drove in a run.

R VSL Tigers - Mariners 13, Tigers 7
0-4, 6th in VSL

The VSL Tigers losing streak to start the year reached four on Saturday as they lost to the VSL Mariners 13-7. Yonny Mosquera got the start and pitched well, allowing just one run in four innings of work with no walks and three strikeouts. Jose Mendoza came on in relief and gave up three runs though in his one inning and suddenly the rout was on. Vijandrick Jacobs came on in and gave up five runs while recording just one out, having walked four, before exiting. Junior Camaripano gave up three more runs though just one earned to complete the scoring allowed. At the plate, Harold Castro had two hits and drove in three runs. Luis Cortez added a solo home run, and Jhosua Montero went 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in a run.
