MiLB Recaps: Bertram Belts Walk-Off Homer

June 2nd Games

AAA Toledo Mud Hens - Scranton/WB 4, Toledo 3
25-31, 4th in West Division

With a pair of Tigers make their rehab debuts, the Mud Hens fell 4-3 to Scranton/Wilkes Barre to fall to last place in the IL West. Phil Coke got the start, giving up three runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work, walking two and striking out six. Brendan Wise allowed four hits in 1 2/3 innings but didn't let a run cross the plate. Lester Oliveros would take the loss, giving up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. At the plate, Magglio Ordonez went 0-for-3 with a strikeout before exiting the game. Bryan Pounds belted a solo home run, and Clete Thomas added a double and two RBI.

AA Erie Seawolves - Erie 6, Harrisburg 5 (10)
26-27, 3rd in Western Division

Erie topped Harrisburg in ten innings on Friday, winning 6-5. As the bottom of the tenth got under way, and the scored knotted at five, Michael Bertram stepped to the plate and promptly belted a shot to center that cleared the wall for a game-winning walk-off home run. Bertram finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. The extra innings also meant yet another no-decision for Jacob Turner, who gave up three runs in 7 1/3 innings of work. He also walked two and struck out five. Zach Simons lost the lead in relief for the 'Wolves, but kept the score tied, and Chance Ruffin picked up the win, tossing two perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts. Audy Ciriaco added three hits including a double and scored twice for the club.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – Lakeland 8, Fort Myers 6
30-25, t-3rd in North Division

Holding off a late charge, the Flying Tigers picked up an 8-6 win over Fort Myers. Drew Smyly got the start and earned the win, giving up two runs in six innings of work with three walks and five strikeouts. Ryan Robowski had a rough relief outing, allowing four runs (three earned) in his inning of relief, but he didn't give up the lead. Zach Samuels pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and Kenny Faulk then shut things down as usual in the ninth. At the plate, Jordan Lennerton added a pair of doubles, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Gustavo Nunez also added three hits, scored once and drove in a pair.

A West Michigan Whitecaps - West Michigan 5, Cedar Rapids 4 (10)
22-33, 8th in Eastern division

The Whitecaps came back from an early 4-0 deficit and eventually pulled out a win in ten innings, 5-4, on Friday. Antonio Cruz got the start, allowing four runs in his first two innings, but then settling down and making it through five innings before exiting. Logan Hoch and Bruce Rondon combined to toss four scoreless innings of relief, and Nate Newman got the win in relief for pitching a scoreless tenth, striking out the side. Jeff Rowland got the game-winning RBI by taking a bases loaded walk in the tenth inning to get the win, scoring Nick Castellanos. Steven Moya added a pair of solo home runs for the club.

R DSL Tigers - Tigers 6, Braves 1
1-2, 3rd in DSL SPM Division

The DSL Tigers finally got in a game on Friday and picked up a 6-1 win over the DSL Braves. Gregorio Solano got the start and picked up the win, giving up a run on three hits in six innings of work with three strikeouts. Ricardo Ciriaco and Cesar Burgos combined to toss three shutout innings of relief to close things out. Francisco Contreras belted a three run home run for the club. Samuel Ortiz also had a big game, reaching base four times with two hits and two walks and scoring once.

R VSL Tigers - Postponed: Rain
6-8, 5th in VSL

The VSL Tigers game with the VSL Reds was postponed on Friday due to rain. They are back in action on Saturday morning against the VSL Rays.
