MiLB Recaps: Starting Pitchers Lead Way

Each morning, check in for the Minor League Recap Blog. Get all of the results from the games, the latest standings and the daily blog recapping the previous day's action. Featured performance: All four starting pitchers turned in great starts, with Josue Carreno giving eight strong innings.

June 3rd Games

AAA Toledo Mud Hens - Toledo 7, Scranton/WB 3
26-31, 4th in West Division

The Mud Hens picked up a 7-3 win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday evening. While the Mud Hens rotation has been hit hard by call-ups, Duane Below still remains and shined in this one, giving up a pair of runs in six innings of work. He also walked two and struck out nine as he earned his fifth win of the season. Matt Hoffman tossed a scoreless inning of relief, while Ryan Perry came on and gave up a run in two innings with three strikeouts while picking up his first save. Ryan Strieby led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Magglio Ordonez in his second rehab appearance had a strong showing, going 3-for-5 also with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Timo Perez and Will Rhymes also combined for five hits and four runs from the first two spots in the order.

AA Erie Seawolves - Erie 3, Harrisburg 1
27-27, 3rd in Western Division

The SeaWolves picked up a 3-1 win over Harrisburg behind a strong start from Luke Putkonen. He tossed seven shutout innings while scattering just four hits, walking none and striking out four as he earned his first win of the season in Erie. Rob Waite tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowing the only run of the game by the 'Wolves, while Austin Wood came on and got the final two outs for his first save. The heart of the order carried the way for the club, with number three hitter Francisco Martinez ripping two hits and scoring once, Rawley Bishop going 2-for-4 with a double and scoring twice and driving in one, and Audy Ciriaco also going 2-for-4 with a double and driving in a pair of runs.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – Tampa 5, Lakeland 2
30-26, t-3rd in North Division

The Flying Tigers fell to the Tampa Yankees 5-2 on Saturday. Trevor Feeney pitched very well but took the loss, giving up two runs in eight innings of work, exiting down 2-1. Tyler Stohr then struggled in relief, giving up three runs in his lone inning of work. Lakeland got a run back in the bottom of the ninth, but not enough to get back in the game. Tony Plagman had two hits and drove in a run for the team.

A West Michigan Whitecaps - West Michigan 6, Cedar Rapids 1
23-33, 8th in Eastern division

West Michigan got another win over Cedar Rapids on Saturday, winning 6-1. Josue Carreno followed the theme of strong starting outings from the pitchers on Saturday with possibly the best of the group, giving up just one unearned run in eight innings of work on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Michael Torrealba pitched the final inning to close things out. At the plate, Dixon Machado ripped a triple and drove in three runs, while Nick Castellanos added a hit, a run and two RBI. Jeff Rowland also reached base three times with a hit and a pair of walks and drove in a run.

R DSL Tigers - Postponed: Rain
1-3, 3rd in DSL SPM Division

The DSL Tigers were again rained out on Saturday. They retrn to action on Monday against the DSL Angels.

R VSL Tigers - Postponed: Rain
6-8, 5th in VSL

The VSL Tigers were again rained out, but return to action on Monday for a doubleheader with the VSL Pirates.
