Tigers Buck Trend, Go Conservative with Pick

After years of being the team that went well over slot to sign premium prospects that had slid down draft boards, the Tigers stayed safe this year, taking Arkansas catcher James McCann with their first pick in the draft, 76th overall.

After years of going back with their first pick, the Tigers made waves for going the opposite direction, selecting relatively unheralded catcher James McCann out of Arkansas.

McCann, former teammate of last year's second round pick Drew Smyly, is a 6-3, 210 pound junior for the Razorbacks, where he held down the team's everyday catching duties.

McCann has been widely praised for his work behind the plate, while his offense picked up in 2011, hitting .306 with 14 doubles and six home runs with 38 runs driven in.

TigsTown will have more on McCann and the rest of the Tigers' draft picks in the coming hours and days.
