MiLB Recaps: Oliver Shines for Toledo

Each morning, check in for the Minor League Recap Blog. Get all of the results from the games, the latest standings and the daily blog recapping the previous day's action. Featured performance: Andrew Oliver tossed six shutout innings for the Mud Hens as Toledo pulled out a 2-1 victory.

July 4th Games

AAA Toledo Mud Hens - Toledo 2, Indianapolis 1
35-51, 4th in West Division

The Mud Hens got a great start from Andrew Oliver as they pulled out a 2-1 win over Indianapolis on Monday. Oliver went six innings, allowing no runs on just four hits, though he did walk six, he still struck out eight as he earned his sixth win of the season. Daniel Schlereth gave up the only run the Hens allowed for the evening, but got strikeouts for all four of the outs he recorded. Chance Ruffin pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one walk with four strikeouts. The offense was still relatively quiet, but got a solo home run from Jeff Salazar, and Ryan Strieby went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

AA Erie Seawolves - Harrisburg 8, Erie 1
42-41, 4th in Western Division

The SeaWolves fell to Harrisburg on Monday as Erie fell behind 7-0 early and could never recover. Mark Sorensen was the victim, getting the start and taking the loss, allowing all eight runs on nine hits in four innings of work - seven of the eight came in the first two innings. Jared Gayhart, Tyler Stohr and Luis Marte combined to not allow a run the rest of the way, but the quiet offense sealed the team's fate. Francisco Martinez went 2-for-4 and scored the club's only run, being driven in by Rawley Bishop, who ripped a double. Gustavo Nunez also had a double in the losing effort.

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers – Dunedin 5, Lakeland 2
4-6, 6th in North Division

Lakeland fell to Dunedin 5-2 on Monday, with Luke Putkonen taking the loss. Putkonen fell to 0-4 for the Flying Tigers, giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He also walked three and struck out three. Shawn Teufel allowed a run in his two innings, while Matt Little tossed a scoreless inning of relief to wrap things up. Julio Rodriguez drove in both of Lakeland's runs in the second inning, but the Flying Tigers despite numerous opportunities, wouldn't score again, going 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Jordan Lennerton also added three hits.

A West Michigan Whitecaps - West Michigan 4, Fort Wayne 3
7-4, 2nd in Eastern division

The 'Caps pulled out a one-run victory on Monday, topping Fort Wayne 4-3, scoring the winning run in the half of the ninth. Alex Burgos got the start, giving up two runs on five hits in five innings of work. He also walked three and struck out six. Antonio Cruz allowed a run in two innings of relief, while Ramon Lebron then earned the win for pitching a scoreless eighth and being the pitcher on record when the 'Caps took the lead via a Luis Castillo single that scored Jeff Rowland from second. Bruce Rondon then came on in the ninth to pick up the save, inducing a double play to end the game. At the plate, Nick Castellanos also had a big game, going 3-for-4 with a double and driving in a pair of runs. Jason Krizan also went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

SS-A Connecticut Tigers - Postponed: Rain
7-8, 3rd in Stedler Division

Connecticut's game at Lowell was postponed due to rain, but will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday evening.

R GCL Tigers - Pirates 10, Tigers 3
5-8, 5th in North Division

The GCL Tigers fell to the GCL Pirates 10-3. Brenny Paulino got the start and made it just one inning, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk. Jake Sabol allowed three more runs in two innings, while Daniel Kickham also allowed three runs in his inning of work. Tyler White did toss two scoreless innings though in the middle of the game. Patrick Smith went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Danry Vasquez and Zach Maxfield each added a run driven in.

R DSL Tigers - Postponed: Rain
9-19, 4th in DSL SPM Division

R VSL Tigers - Tigers 7, Mariners 5
14-27, 6th in VSL

The VSL Tigers picked up a 7-5 win over the VSL Mariners on Monday. Eduardo Rojas got the start, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits in three innings of work. Jose Rodriguez got the win in relief, tossing three shutout innings, allowing just one hit with a strikeout. Angel Nesbitt then got the save for tossing the final three innings and also not allowing a run while yielding just one hit and two walks. Orvin Tovar had a solo home run for the club, while Harold Castro and Anderson Yance each had two hits, scored once and drove in a run. Jose Soledad also added three hits including a double.
