Tigers Sign 15th Round Pick Tyler Gibson

With the signing deadline looming at midnight tonight, the Tigers have stepped up to the plate and signed 15th round pick Tyler Gibson to an over-slot bonus.

After negotiating through the end of last week and the weekend, the Tigers and Gibson agreed on a contract that includes a $525,000 signing bonus, far in excess of the standard bonus for the 15th round. Gibson's contract also includes funding for eight full semesters of college at the Tigers' expense.

The contract is still contingent on Gibson passing his physical in Lakeland later today; a formality that is not expected to be a problem.

Gibson, an outfielder from Stratford Academy (Ga.), is considered a well above-average athlete with the potential for a power-speed offensive profile that the Tigers minor league system is sorely lacking.

Some scouts believe he could move to an outfield corner as he continues to fill out his frame, but as of now he has the speed and is developing the instincts for center field.
