Cardinals make second cuts of spring

The St. Louis Cardinals reassigned seven players to minor league camp on Thursday. Among them are system-wide top 10 prospects Kolten Wong and Tyrell Jenkins.

Following their fourth spring training game and their first victory, over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday afternoon, the St. Louis Cardinals reassigned seven players to minor-league camp, reports

Four are pitchers, lefties John Gast and Nick Greenwood, along with right-handers Tyrell Jenkins and Adam Reifer. Also sent down were catchers Cody Stanley and Luis De La Cruz as well as second baseman Kolten Wong.

Last year, Gast, 22, was in one of the final groups of cuts after a strong spring performance. This year, he is among the earlier reassignees. Reifer, 25, had knee surgery 11 months ago and likely needs some time to get back to normal. He is the only one of the seven cut already on the 40-man roster and the first 40-man player to be reassigned this spring.

The Cardinal Nation top 10 prospects Wong (#4) and Jenkins (#8) were among the least experienced players in camp and likely will receive future benefit from their limited time among the major leaguers. With fewer pitchers in major-league camp, catchers Stanley and De La Cruz are no longer needed.

The Cardinals had made their first cuts this Monday, sending down two players, Robert Stock and Jordan Swagerty.

After Wednesday's moves, the Cardinals now have 51 players in major league camp – 38 members of the 40-man roster and 13 NRIs. To see the entire list, check out the Roster Matrix at The Cardinal Nation Blog.
