2012 TigsTown Awards: DSL Tigers

Sometimes at the lowest levels of the minor leagues, top performances can be challenging to find, as many players are still developing physically. That's not the case this year for the DSL Tigers, as the club had a pair of standout performers that emerged to take home player and pitcher of the year.

DSL Tigers Player of the Year
OF Sandy Acevedo

DSL Tigers 164 .280 .403 .482 47 / 27 8 / 6

The 2012 season represented Acevedo's third professional season, all in the Dominican Summer League, but despite that lengthy career, he is still just 19-years old. Playing in 51 games for the DSL Tigers, the teenaged Acevedo hit a career best .280 with 27 walks and 47 strikeouts. His 27 walks and eight hit by pitches pushed him to a .403 on-base percentage. Beyond all that he slugged six doubles, six triples and five home runs to round out his profile. Acevedo is a well-rounded player that stands out for his athletic body and strong arm. Scout project some additional power to come as he reaches physical maturity, allowing him to profile on an outfield corner.

DSL Tigers Pitcher of the Year
LHP Jesus Guzman

DSL Tigers 4-1 24 / 0 44.2 2.01 54 / 9 .174

A former Washington Nationals farmhand for two years, the now 21-year old Guzman was signed by the Tigers at the last minute. Working multi-inning stints out of the bullpen, Guzman was a valuable member of the DSL Tigers pitching staff. In 24 games, the lefty logged 44 2/3 innings, allowing only 27 hits and nine walks. He punched out 54 batters and allowed only three home runs along the way. His 2.01 ERA was one of the team's best and he even finished with a 4-1 record out of the ‘pen. Scouts may not view Guzman as a top prospect, but it is impossible to ignore his value to the DSL Tigers in 2012.
