Fields Powers Erie to Win (5/25 Recaps)

Erie utilized strong pitching and a bit of power against Akron on Saturday, riding a strong outing by Warwick Saupold and a strong performance at the plate by Daniel Fields to a win. West Michigan's Yorfrank Lopez had a strong outing of his own in leading the Whitecaps to a win over Lake County and the VSL Tigers topped the Rays. Toledo and Lakeland both fell.

Toledo held a 1-0 lead early in Saturday's game against Gwinnett but the Mud Hens couldn't hold the lead for long, falling to the Braves 4-2. Starting pitcher Shawn Hill fell to 0-5 with the loss after allowing three earned runs on 9 hits in five innings of work. Jordan Lennerton had another strong night at the plate in the loss, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his eighth of the season. Kevin Russo also drove in a run on a 1-for-3 night.

Erie jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Saturday's game against Akron and never relinquished it as the SeaWolves topped the Aeros 4-1. Starting pitcher Warwick Saupold improved his record to 4-1 with the win after allowing just one earned run on two hits over six innings. Justin Souza earned his eleventh save of the season in the win. Daniel Fields had a strong outing offensively for Erie, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two runs driven in in the win. Jamie Johnson also drove in a run for the SeaWolves.

High-A Lakeland Flying Tigers
18-30, 6th in North Division

A five-run second inning for Daytona in Saturday's game was too much for Lakeland to overcome despite a late charge as the Flying Tigers fell to the Cubs 5-4. Starting pitcher Nick Avila earned his first loss of the season after giving up five earned runs on six hits over 4 ? innings. Harold Castro had a strong night at the plate for the Flying Tigers, going 2-for-5 with a run driven in and a run scored in the loss.

Low-A West Michigan Whitecaps
22-24, 4th in Eastern Division

Yorfrank Lopez took the mound for West Michigan in its series opener against Lake County on Saturday and had no problem deciphering the Captains' offense, leading the Whitecaps to a 6-1 win. Lopez improved his record to 5-2 by allowing just one earned run on five hits over six innings of work while striking out five. Brennan Smith earned his first save on the year in the win. Five different Whitecaps drove in runs in the win, with Jared Reaves leading the charge with a double, an RBI and two drawn walks on a 1-for-3 night.

The VSL Tigers ended the ninth inning with a 5-5 tie against the Rays on Sunday before scoring four in the tenth inning, topping the Rays in a 9-5 final. Starting pitcher Eduardo Jimenez earned a no decision in the start, allowing two earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. Johan Belisario earned his first win of the season in relief despite blowing a save opportunity. Ariel Serrano had a big night offensively for the Tigers, pounding two home runs and driving in three runs on a 2-for-5 night at the plate.
