MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 31

Sampson has a rough outing in Tucson and the bullpen lets down the Missions again. Jeremy Baltz continues to hit for the Storm while Max Fried goes 7 for Fort Wayne. The AZL Padres season comes to an end and the end can't come fast enough for Eugene.

Las Vegas 51s 8 - T-Pads 6

Key Statistics: 3B Gregorio Petit 4-5, RBI, HR (4); RF Mike Wilson 2-4, BB, 2B; 1B Brandon Allen 2-4, 5 RBIs, 2 HRs (17); LF Ben Francisco 2-4; 2B Jonathan Galvez 2-4; RHP Keyvius Sampson (L, 2-3) 4.2 IP 9 H 6 R 6 ER 4 Ks 2 HRs.

Prospect Watch: Las Vegas is one of the parks in the PCL along with Albuquerque and Colorado Springs, that makes Tucson's Kino Stadium into PETCO and Saturday night was no exception as five balls left the park...1B Brandon Allen, who has hit .270/.349/.482 this season, hit two home runs for five RBIs. The Padres are Allen's fifth organization after being drafted out of high school in Texas. He had some big years in the Diamondback's organization but just never seemed to be able to perform in his big league opportunities...SS Dean Anna was 1-5 to drop his average to .333 but still sits atop the PCL lead in batting average...Sampson is now 2-2 with a 6.88 ERA in his past five starts since being recalled from San Antonio.

Corpus Christi Hooks 10 Missions 9

Key Statistics Cory Spangenberg 3-4, 2B, 3B; 1B Tommy Medica 4-5, 2B, HR (16) 2 RBIs; 3B Jake Blackwood 2-5; RF Yeison Ascensio 3-4, 2 2Bs, RBI; C Austin Hedges 2-3, 2B, RBI; RHP Josh Geer 5.0 IP 11 H 5 R 5 ER BB 2 Ks; RHP Jeremy McBryde (BS, 2 (L, 4-4).

Prospect Watch: A brutal loss for the Missions as Jeremy McBryde, who has been very good this season, allowed the Hooks to plate four runs in the bottom of the ninth. The big blow was Catcher Austin Hedges throwing error in the bottom of the ninth off of a dribbler by Preston Tucker that got past first baseman Tommy Medica. It was the second night in a row that the Missions lost in the last frame of the game. San Antonio has now lost eight of their last ten going into the playoffs....The blown save was only the second this season for McBryde...On the positive side Austin Hedges had his third consecutive multi-hit game and has pushed his average to .219 and Cory Spangenberg continued his torrid August with three hits tonight including two for extra-bases. Spangenberg is now hitting .330/.351/.459 in August...I understand that Tommy Medica is 25 and not considered a prospect by many pundits but you also have to take his injuries into account and that he can really hit. A .561 slugging percentage in the Texas League is something to pay attention too.

Prospect Watch: The Storm have now won three of their past five games..Jeremy Baltz is also five for ten in the two game series in High Desert with four of them for extra bases...The tenth win of the season was a career high for James Needy along with throwing 134 innings...RHP Cody Hebner, who threw a scoreless inning tonight, has also pitched well in middle relief with 77 strikeouts in 72.2 innings pitched with only 56 hits allowed for a 3.72 ERA. The only real negative is 41 walks.

Great Lakes Loons 4 TinCaps 3

Key Statistics: CF Mallex Smith 1-3, BB, SB (62);j2B Maxx Tissenbaum 2-4, 2B; 1B Luis Tejada 2-4, 2B; LHP Max Fried (L, 6-7) 7.0 IP 6 H 3 R 2 ER 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch Max Fried had his longest outing of the year and pitched well despite taking the loss. This season Fried made 23 starts and pitched 118.2 innings with a 3.49 ERA, which is very good for a nineteen year old in a full-season league...With his double tonight Tissenbaum is now leading the team in doubles with 28 and has 30 extra-base hits on the season...RF Hunter Renfroe was 0-4 tonight to push his average down to .211/.274/.404 in 61 plate appearances. He may not be a lock for Lake Elsinore next year.

Salem-Kelzer Volcanoes 7 Emeralds 1

Key Statistics: LF Malquiel Brito 2-4, HR (4); SS Felipe Blanco 1-3, 2B; LHP Vladimir de la Cruz (L, 0-3) 1.0 Ip 2 H 2 R 2 ER 3 BB 2 Ks HR; RHP Michael Kelly 3.1 IP 3 H 5 R ER 2 BB 5 Ks

Prospect Watch Tonight's loss dropped the Emeralds to 27-47 with only three games left in the season...How bad is the offense in Eugene? Four of the starting nine finished the game with batting averages under .200 and no one was above .260...Donavan Tate was 0-4 tonight after a big night last night...Former first round supplemental pick RHP Michael Kelly, who was drafted in the same 2011 draft class with Cory Spangenberg, Austin Hedges and Joe Ross, continues to struggle in Eugene with a 6.10 ERA in 35 innings.

AZL Giants 5 AZL Padres 1

Key Statistics: SS Franchy Cordero 2-4; 2B Josh VanMeter 1-4; LF Jose Urena 1-3; LHP Payton Baskette (L,0-1) 5.0 IP 3 H 4 R 3 ER BB 2 Ks.

Prospect Watch: The playoff run of the AZL Padres came to an end tonight in the one game playoff format of the AZL. Still some strong performances and we could see a significant number of these players make the 2014 Fort Wayne TinCaps...the most interesting prospect has to be 6'3" shortstop Franchy Cordero who finished the season at .333/.381/.511. The left-handed hitting nineteen-year-old Dominican may be the Padres' best Latin American prospect since Rymer Liriano.
