Listed at 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, Thompson is already a big, well developed 19 year old.
On the mound, the right-hander delivers the ball from a traditional 3/4 arm slot. His mechanics and delivery are relatively clean and easy on the arm.
Thompson's heavy sinking fastball sat in the 89-92 mph range, scrapping as high as 93 mph on a nearby scout's radar gun. He regularly mixed in a mid-80s slider as well, manipulating the movement at times where it almost appeared as more of a slurvy offering. Thompson leaned heavily on the slider and appeared comfortable utilizing it regardless of the count and as both a chase pitch and a strike within the zone. He also sprinkled in a small amount of curveballs and change-ups throughout the outing.
Uncharacteristically, Thompson fired just 51 of his 89 pitches for strikes. That being said, command and control were a bit of a bear as he occasionally missed his spots; even plunking two batters during the fifth inning.
When all was said and done, Thompson would finish the day with a no-decision and a respectable line: 5 2/3 IP 6H 2BB 2ER 5K.
Overall I left Fifth Third Stadium impressed with Jake Thompson last Sunday. Thompson showcased a decent feel for pitching, especially when you factor in his age. There was noticeable improvement from when I observed him last, which was earlier this spring in Lakeland. Going back even further to last season in the GCL, Thompson has made noticeable strides to improve several facets of his game.
Moving forward I'd like to see Thompson attack the inner-half of the plate more frequently. He also must sharpen and work in his change-up and/or curveball more to be successful at higher levels. Improving his command and control should also be top priorities this off-season. Regardless of the work that still needs to be done, Thompson should feel very well about what he's accomplished this season.
