Scouting Report

Body: Good frame; has present strength and room for some more on 6-foot-3 body; broad shoulders; solid athlete; body appears to have projection but skeptical of additional physical development at this point.

Hit: Simple mechanics; starts with high hands above shoulder; small trigger and then throws hands at the zone from back shoulder; keeps hands in well; stays short and consistent to the ball; small stride during pitch; minimal head movement and typically has good timing; moves the ball around; contact oriented swing and approach; has idea at the plate; will work deep counts; gap power that manifests in occasional over-the-fence pop; some hit potential but will be tested against advanced arms. Grade – Present 3/Future 4

Power: Strength in frame; line drive swing; lacks leverage or ability to backspin ball; drives to the gaps consistently; home run power is not substantial and will not be significant part of game; below-average grade but will net some doubles. Grade – 3+/4

Speed: Consistent average to solid-average down the line; timed at 4.17-4.21 consistently over the summer; speed plays better in OF; runs above-average once underway; not a burner but speed plays well because of instincts and aggressiveness; solid-average run overall. Grade – 5+/5+

Defense: Instinctual defender; reads the ball well off the bat; breaks quickly and commonly on the right line; takes direct routes; max-effort defender; has chops for CF in minor leagues but may be stretched at the position at MLB level; defends at above-average level on either corner; ability to play CF in a pinch will help profile. Grade – 5/5+

Arm: Didn't really show it off this summer; occasional above-average throw; more frequently average; quick release; accuracy waivered throughout viewings; potential solid-average arm with improved accuracy; consistently threw to correct base/player; arm can play in LF/CF with ease and has potential for RF with improved consistency. Grade – 5/%+

Other: Quality player; quality person; plays the game hard; understands his job on the field; good instincts for the game; quite confidence; potential for leadership role.

Final Word

Summary: Plays hard; has some ability; defense-first profile; potential solid- to above-average glove on corners; can handle CF when needed; arm should play around OF; speed plays better underway; solid- to above-average run; bat is a little light; below-average hit projection; below-average power though doubles should come through; has offensive plan; overall below-average offensive profile.

Risk: Moderate risk; no full-season experience; instincts to play; low ceiling player with good chance to realize potential.

Projection: Defense will lead profile; bat will come up short; fourth outfield projection with ability to play all three spots; won't be black hole at the plate because of approach and gap power; chance to move quickly due to polish; potential 2016 ETA.
