TigsTown Power Rankings (5/28)

While Jake Thompson continues to cruise at the top of the power rankings, there's a new name making a push at the top of the rankings - a big power-hitting outfielder.

As a reminder, the weekly rankings do not re?ect overall prospect status; nor are they exclusive to members of the TigsTown Top 50. The weekly update factors both performance from the previous week of play and overall numbers. Only players currently in the minors will be eligible each week. Be sure to check back every Wednesday for the latest edition.

1. RHP Jake Thompson - A+ Lakeland
50 IP | 1.80 ERA | 1.08 WHIP | 4 - 1 | 45 K | 17 BB |
Thompson holds the top spot yet again in the Power Rankings after earning his fourth win last week against the Tampa Bay Rays High-A affiliate. The right-hander struck out four, allowed three hits, four walks and an earned run over five innings during. Due to an innings limit, Thompson had his spot in the rotation skipped Tuesday night.

2. RHP Jonathon Crawford - A West Michigan
41 2/3 IP | 2.16 ERA | 1.03 WHIP | 2 - 1 | 41 K | 12 BB |
Crawford earned his second win of the season, scattering three hits and a walk and striking out nine over seven shutout innings. Crawford has tightened things up after a disastrous MWL debut earlier this season, allowing just three earned runs over his last 39 1/3 innings. Pack his bags and ship him to Lakeland already! (Ed. Note: I'm sure this recommendation is based off objective analysis, and not the writer's desire for the Tigers' top draft pick last season to pitch for the team he sees regularly)

3. RHP Austin Kubitza - A West Michigan
52 IP | 2.08 ERA | 1.06 WHIP | 5 - 0 | 65 K | 18 BB |
Kubitza earned a no-decision earlier this week. The Tigers fourth rounder from last season's June Draft struck out eight and allowed two runs (one earned) over the six inning start. The 6'5" 22-year-old remains tied for the MWL lead in wins with five so far this season. His 2.08 ERA is third lowest and his 65 strikeouts are third most in the MWL thus far.

4. SS Eugenio Suarez - AAA Toledo
179 AB | .291 AVG | .871 OPS | 18 2B | 1 3B | 8 HR | 8 SB
Suarez is batting .417 with four doubles and two homers over his first 24 ABs in Toledo. The 22-year-old infielder is amongst the top five in several categories, and he leads the Tigers Minor League system in RBI.

5. OF Steven Moya - AA Erie
173 AB | .272 AVG | .813 OPS | 15 2B | 2 3B | 8 HR |
The "Adonis" otherwise known as Steven Moya has been destroying baseballs lately. Batting .368 with a ridiculous 1.132 OPS over his past ten games, Moya has slugged three homers and two doubles over his past two games. Furthermore, since the calendar flipped to May, Moya is batting .321 with 19 extra base hits--six of which are homers. Moya currently boasts the 4th most doubles and 9th highest slugging percentage in the Eastern League. In short, he's a beast.

6. LHP Josh Turley - A+ Lakeland
56 1/3 IP | 2.08 ERA | 0.99 WHIP | 4 - 0 | 48 K | 14 BB |
A week has gone by, and southpaw Josh Turley continues to shove on a regular basis in Lakeland's rotation. The 23-year-old threw eight innings of shutout ball, striking out five against the Miami Marlins High-A affiliate Tuesday night. Turley currently boasts the 3rd lowest WHIP and 7th lowest ERA in the FSL.

7. LHP Kevin Ziomek - A West Michigan
50 IP | 2.34 ERA | 1.12 WHIP | 3 - 5 | 56 K | 25 BB | 7 SB
Crafty southpaw Kevin Ziomek got touched up for eight runs (six earned) over his two starts since we last checked in. Despite last week's performance, the Tigers second rounder from last season's June Draft currently possesses the fifth lowest ERA and fourth most strikeouts in the MWL.

8. RHP Angel Nesbitt - A+ Lakeland
27 1/3 IP | 0.99 ERA | 1.02 WHIP | 1 - 0 | 24 K | 8 BB | 9 SV
Nesbitt has quietly been on a tear this month (and really this entire season), not allowing a run since May 5th (a span of 10 2/3 IP). The 23-year-old closer's nine saves are second best in the FSL. As I discussed last week on the premium board, in addition to adding a cutter, Nesbitt's FB velocity has spiked his past few times out, reaching as high as 98 mph numerous times.

9. OF Ezequiel Carrera - AAA Toledo
144 AB | .319 AVG | .863 OPS | 6 2B | 3 3B | 3 HR | 19 SB
Perhaps the polar opposite of the term prospect, regardless, Ezequiel Carrera has been on fire his last ten games, batting .368 with a 1.050 OPS. The 26-year-old outfielder leads the International League in stolen bases, has the sixth best batting average and eighth best OPS.

10. RHP Chad Smith - AAA Toledo
26 IP | 1.73 ERA | 0.92 WHIP | 2 - 1 | 25 K | 7 BB | 1 SV
Smith picked up a win Tuesday night after throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. The 24-year-old right-hander has dominated since his promotion to Triple-A Toledo, allowing just two earned runs with a 11/2 strikeout to walk ratio over 13 innings.
