AAA Toledo - LHP Kyle Lobstein
38 2/3 IP | 1.16 ERA | .250 BAA | 4-2 | 40 K | 7 BB |
After a rough first month, Lobstein rebounded very nicely with an impressive month of May. Lobstein went more than five innings in every start he made, allowing more than one run just once, while striking out more than a batter per inning. The timing was particularly important as the club lost their top starter in April, Robbie Ray, for most of the month to the big league club.
Runner-Up: LHP Blaine Hardy
AA Erie - RHP Jose Valdez
16 1/3 IP | 2.76 ERA | .237 BAA | 1-0 | 23 K | 9 BB | 5 SV
Valdez stepped in the month of May after the 'Wolves lost Corey Knebel to Toledo (and eventually the big leagues), striking out more than a batter per inning and recording five saves. Valdez also appeared to harness his stuff, as he pushed his K:BB ratio to 2.56, after walking more than he struck out in the first month of the year. On the downside, Valdez still allowed three home runs, a stat that might have cost him the award, if not for a lack of a strong starting pitcher for the month.
Runner-Up: LHP Ryan Robowski
A+ Lakeland - RHP Angel Nesbitt
16 1/3 IP | 0.55 ERA | .161 BAA | 0-0 | 15 K | 3 BB | 10 SV
Nesbitt had an impressive April, but turned it up to another notch in May, giving up just one earned run and nine hits over 13 appearances, converting ten of those for saves. Nesbitt's non-existent ERA and impressive strikeout numbers helped him edge out Eichhorn, who posted a 1.35 ERA over six starts.
Runner-Up: RHP Kevin Eichhorn
A West Michigan - RHP Austin Kubitza
35 2/3 IP | 1.51 ERA | .178 BAA | 2-0 | 41 K | 14 BB |
A strong first month led to a dominating second month for last year's fourth round pick, as his impressive slider is making quick work of Low-A competition. Kubitza's ERA was aided by five of the runs he allowed in the month being unearned, but that didn't make a difference in his nearly 11 K/9 rate, which he did all on his own. The only unfortunate aspect is that only one West Michigan starter could win the award, as Crawford was very impressive too, but only made four starts in the month.
Runner-Up: RHP Jonathon Crawford
