Tigers Sign Dominican OF Julio Martinez

On the first day of the international signing period, the Tigers signed 16-year old outfielder Julio Martinez out of the Dominican Republic.

Listed at 6-2, 185 pounds by the Dominican Prospect League (DPL), Julio Martinez was projected to receive a large bonus as a 16-year old. MLB.com listed Martinez as the 19th best international prospect in this year's signing period, while Scout.com's Kiley McDaniel projected Martinez would receive a bonus in the $250,000-$700,000 range.

Martinez is a classic power prospect with a body that projects to hit for power while playing in the corner outfield. As he's still young and growing, there's also the possibility that he ends up at first base if his athleticism doesn't hold up to maintain defensively in the outfield.

Per MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez, Martinez received a $600,000 signing bonus.
