2014 TigsTown Awards: Lakeland Flying Tigers

The Flying Tigers were led by an excellent rotation and a number of steady members of the everyday lineup. Which player and pitcher earned the honors for 2014?

Lakeland Flying Tigers Player of the Year
OF Connor Harrell

Team AB AVG OBP SLG K / BB SB / CS
Lakeland 485 .270 .344 .423 135 / 37 15 / 3

Harrell and outfield mate Jeff McVaney were two of the mainstays in the Flying Tigers’ lineup, and both were neck and neck in offensive productivity, posting similar numbers across the board. Harrell belted 14 home runs and led the team in runs scored with 66. McVaney did have a slight edge in OPS and stolen bases, however Harrell put him his numbers while playing a very good defensive center field for the club, posting a 2.4 range factor, including making nine outfield assists. After providing a steadying presence in Lakeland in 2014, Harrell could have the opportunity to make a push up the ladder, as the Tigers will search for answers in center field for 2015 and Harrell could find himself on the fast track up if he can hold his own.

Lakeland Flying Tigers Pitcher of the Year
LHP Josh Turley

Team W-L G / GS IP ERA K / BB AVG
Lakeland 7-1 18 / 13 97.1 2.50 81 / 23 .205

When the season began, Turley was looking at another bullpen assignment, after shining for the Whitecaps out of the bullpen in 2013. But just a couple weeks into the year, he was moved into the rotation, and never looked back, including finding more success after a late season promotion to Double-A Erie. Turley utilized an array of pitches, including an at times wicked knuckleball to lead an impressive rotation in ERA, at just 1.85, striking out 7.5 batters per nine innings, and posting an almost as impressive 2.73 FIP. Turley did so well that he earned the promotion to Erie ahead of fellow staff mates like Edgar De La Rosa, who was very good in his own right, and while he may not hold the same big league future as De La Rosa or now Texas Ranger farmhand Jake Thompson, it was an impressive year for the lefty.
