VSL Tigers Player of the Year
CF Jose Azocar
|Team||AB||AVG||OBP||SLG||K / BB||SB / CS|
|VSL Tigers||250||.340||.373||.428||48 / 11||13 / 5|
Azocar turned 18 just before the 2014 Venezuelan Summer League campaign got under way and promptly turned in an excellent season, hitting .340, which was good for the VSL batting crown, while working as the club’s everyday center fielder. Azocar played most days in 2013 at just 17 years of age, but struggled to make contact and hit for much of an average. Azocar went out this year however and raised his average over 100 points while lowering his strikeout rate and raising his walk rate. He also raised his range factor in center to 2.5, while providing 11 assists from the outfield. Azocar remains an intriguing prospect to watch, given the success he had at such a young age.
VSL Tigers Pitcher of the Year
LHP Eudis Idrogo
|Team||W-L||G / GS||IP||ERA||K / BB||AVG|
|VSL Tigers||4-1||13 / 12||59.1||0.91||42 / 12||.203|
Idrogo took a big step forward in his third tour of duty in the VSL, after a second season where he struggled to adapt to role in which he was believed to be one of the better prospects on the VSL Tigers pitching staff. Idrogo’s miniscule 0.91 ERA was good for the best ERA among qualified pitchers in the VSL. He was incredibly consistent as well, as in ten of Idrogo’s 13 appearances, he allowed fewer than two runs, and in the other three starts, he was victimized by poor defense as he yielded five unearned runs. The young lefty was especially impressive against left-handed hitters (possibly indicating a future as a LOOGY), giving up a .179 average with a 0.66 WHIP. After such a dominating season, it seems likely that the Tigers would bring him Stateside to face some stiffer competition in 2015.
