Transaction Blog: Machado Up for Lobstein

With Kyle Lobstein's sore shoulder sending him to the disabled list, the Tigers will temporarily replace him with defensive whiz prospect Dixon Machado. Plus, another highly touted arm hit suffered an injury this week.

  • LOBSTEIN TO DL, MACHADO UP

Placed Kyle Lobstein (LHP) on Detroit’s 15-day disabled list with a sore left shoulder

Recalled Dixon Machado (SS) from Toledo

Transferred Brendan Harris (IF) to Toledo from Erie

Assigned Will Clinard (LHP) to Lakeland after activating from Erie’s 7-day disabled list

Transferred Tommy Collier (RHP) to Erie from Lakeland

Assigned Scott Sitz (RHP) to Erie from extended spring training

Placed Edgar De La Rosa (RHP) on Erie’s 7-day disabled list with a strained lat

Transferred Scott Sitz (RHP) to extended spring training from Lakeland

Analysis:

The Tigers had suspected something was wrong with Lobstein since spring training, when his velocity was down, and he finally relented and acknowledged the pain that placed him on the DL. The good news is that with it just being soreness and no surgery required, his DL stint should be short-lived. In the immediate term, Dixon Machado will take Lobstein’s place on the roster, but Buck Farmer will be the one getting the start in his place on Thursday, when another roster move will happen, likely Machado returning to Toledo.

The other noteworthy information is the move that placed De La Rosa on the disabled list with a lat strain. While still not official yet per the league, De La Rosa was removed from the game last Tuesday, and the move to promote Sitz should take his slot on the roster.

  • V-MART TO DL, COLLINS UP

Placed Victor Martinez (DH) on Detroit’s 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation

Recalled Tyler Collins (OF) from Toledo

Transferred Jeff McVaney (OF) to Toledo from Erie

Transferred Curt Powell (IF) to Erie from Lakeland

Transferred David Gonzalez (IF) to Lakeland from West Michigan

Assigned Steven Fuentes (IF) to West Michigan

Activated Ryan Longstreth (LHP) from Lakeland’s 7-day disabled list

Transferred Scott Sitz (RHP) to extended spring training from Lakeland

Analysis:

After weeks of struggles, a particularly bad 0-for-4 night on Monday, and an admission that Martinez had aggravated his left knee on the last homestand, the Tigers finally made the decision to give him at least a couple weeks of rest. His struggles are well documented, but the slow start of his replacement, Tyler Collins, has not been. Collins was hitting just .248 with six doubles and no home runs. Despite the slow start when it came to productivity, Collins had a line drive percentage of 25%, so even if he wasn’t finding hits, he was hitting the ball hard. He’ll be expected to fill in at times in the DH role for Martinez, in addition to providing support as a backup outfielder, and likely spending a fair amount of time on the bench. The other moves helped backfill the open spot that was opened up by the Martinez move, for the most part.

Analysis:

A few departures from the Tigers organization on Friday, as the club announced they had released Wells and Duran, in addition to the news that Kellogg and Felipe (with the DSL Tigers) had retired. Wells had been signed in spring training to provide organizational depth, but hit just .209 in 43 at-bats with Erie. Duran meanwhile posted an 8.64 ERA in 7 appearances, and with Green and Perry coming off the DL, they need to clear some room.

The promotions of Reininger and Rogers are both exciting news, as both had looked good in Lakeland, especially Reininger, who will be highlighted in an upcoming Minor League Notebook soon. He had not allowed a run over 11 innings of work, while Rogers had ten scoreless innings to his credit.

Activated Joe Jimenez (RHP) from West Michigan’s 7-day disabled list

Transferred Chase Edwards (RHP) to extended spring training from West Michigan

Transferred Rashad Brown (OF) to extended spring training from West Michigan

Analysis:

Plenty of good news when it comes to injury-related movement over the past couple days, as the Whitecaps activated both Jimenez and Hill from the DL. Meanwhile, after a week of games in Lakeland, Moya was sent back to Toledo, which would have been his full season assignment had he not had the heel injury late in camp. Moya went 0-for-4 in his first game with Toledo (after hitting .275 with 3 home runs and 3 doubles in Lakeland), while Hill went 2-for-5 and stole two bases in his first game back on Friday night. Jimenez made his return on Saturday, but allowed a run on two hits while striking out two in an inning of work.

On the new injuries, Green was battling an undisclosed illness, while Ferrell has been experiencing tightness in his throwing shoulder.

  • KROL TO TOLEDO, WILSON UP

Optioned Ian Krol (LHP) to Toledo

Recalled Alex Wilson (RHP) from Toledo

Analysis:

Despite throwing two scoreless innings of relief on Wednesday, the Tigers optioned Krol to Toledo, who did have a rough outing the night prior. Wilson however has been excellent so far in Toledo. He’s not allowed a run over four appearances, striking out five while walking one. Wilson was acquired this off-season as a part of the Rick Porcello-Yoenis Cespedes deal - he posted a 1.91 ERA over 18 games last year for Boston and was expected to contribute in Detroit’s bullpen this season.

It’s unknown at this point if the move was motivated by a sudden need to have another available arm after the short outing from Price, or if the Tigers weren’t pleased with Krol’s performance.

  • TWO MORE CAPS, INCLUDING JIMENEZ, TO DL

Transferred Montreal Robertson (RHP) to extended spring training from Lakeland

Placed Julio Felix (RHP) on Lakeland’s 7-day disabled list, retroactive to 4/16

Activated Micah Kellogg (RHP) from Lakeland’s temporary inactive list

Transferred Nate Fury (RHP) to Lakeland from West Michigan

Placed Joe Jimenez (RHP) on West Michigan’s 7-day disabled list with lower back spasms

Placed Will Maddox (1B) on West Michigan’s 7-day disabled list

Assigned Chase Edwards (RHP) to West Michigan from extended spring training

Assigned Francisco Contreras (3B) to West Michigan from extended spring training

Analysis:

The Whitecaps continue to be hammered by injuries in the early going this year, as Jimenez and Maddox both were placed on the disabled list in the past few days. Neither injury is expected to be serious - Jimenez felt something wrong in his back when he was throwing in his last outing on April 17 according to Emily Waldon of Bless You Boys, while Maddox injured his leg trying to stretch a single into a double and had to be lifted from Tuesday’s game.

The Flying Tigers were hit as well, as Felix was sent to the DL, and Robertson was sent back to EST. Between the two A-ball clubs, the extended spring roster has been getting plenty of work early on this season.

  • MOYA ACTIVATED, SENT TO LAKELAND

Activated Steven Moya (OF) from Toledo’s 7-day disabled list and reassigned to Lakeland

Reassigned Ismael Salgado (OF) to extended spring training from Lakeland

Analysis:

After starting the year on the disabled list with a heel injury diagnosed as plantar fasciitis, Moya was activated and placed on the equivalent of a minor league rehab assignment, and being assigned to the Flying Tigers, as he had been rehabbing in Lakeland. It wasn’t a great debut for Moya, who went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, but it was encouraging that just over a week after starting the year on the DL, he was ready to return to action.

Here’s video of Moya in action, from TigsTown senior Lakeland correspondent James Chipman:

  • DEREK HILL AMONG 3 CAPS TO DL

Placed Derek Hill (CF) on West Michigan’s 7-day disabled list with left quad strain

Placed Adam Ravenelle (RHP) on West Michigan’s 7-day disabled list with undisclosed illness

Placed Artie Lewicki (RHP) on West Michigan’s 7-day disabled list with a strained right pectoral muscle

Assigned Austin Schotts (OF) to West Michigan

Assigned Ross Seaton (RHP) to West Michigan

Assigned Tyler Ford (LHP) to West Michigan

Analysis:

Disappointing injury news came out of West Michigan earlier this week, as a trio of ‘Caps were placed on the disabled list, with a variety of injuries. The biggest loss of course is Hill, who is the top prospects in the Tigers farm system, and was making his full-season debut with West Michigan. Ravenelle’s illness shouldn’t keep him out long, but does open up a spot in the bullpen (which will be taken by Ford) and Lewicki’s injury opens a spot in the rotation, which will go to Seaton.

This does of course open up an opportunity for Schotts, who didn’t get a full-season assignment coming out of spring. Schotts of course was a high draft pick back in 2012 and had a torrid start to his pro career, but has seen his prospect stock fall dramatically over the past couple years. The Hill injury opens up playing time at a level Schotts should be able to succeed at now, and it’ll be up to him to take advantage.

April 8 4:00 PM
  • NATHAN TO DL, LOBSTEIN/HARDY UP

Placed Joe Nathan (RHP) on Detroit’s 15-day disabled list with right elbow flexor strain

Recalled Kyle Lobstein (LHP) from Toledo

Recalled Blaine Hardy (LHP) from Toledo

Transferred Ryan Robowski (LHP) to Toledo from Erie

Assigned Brennan Smith (RHP) to Erie

Assigned Scott Sitz (RHP) to Lakeland

Reassigned Francisco Contreras (3B) to extended spring training from West Michigan

Assigned David Gonzalez (IF) to West Michigan

Analysis:

While much of the injury attention has been focused on Justin Verlander, the Tigers out of the blue announced on Wednesday that closer Joe Nathan would be heading to the DL, after battling elbow soreness that flared up again after his outing on Monday. Taking his place in the bullpen will be Hardy, called up from Toledo before their season even started, but he’ll assume a role in middle and long relief, while Joakim Soria will handle closer duties until Nathan returns.

Besides Nathan, the Tigers made it known that Verlander would not be ready for his first start of the season on Sunday by calling up Lobstein to take that spot. Conventional wisdom had been that if JV would be ready, they’d call up a reliever to take his spot until Sunday, and if he wouldn’t be, they’d call up a starter, as one would be needed. The decision to select Lobstein likely means it’ll be at least another week until Verlander is ready to resume a starting role.
