At the Park: Scouting Joe Jimenez

Get a scout's take from a few recent appearances from West Michigan closer Joe Jimenez.

Name: Joe Jimenez
Position: Relief Pitcher
Date of Birth: January 17, 1995
Bats/Throws: Right/Right
Dates Observed: April 11, May11 and June 4, 2015
Acquired: Undrafted Free Agent, 2013

Body: (6’3”, 220) Well built; looks the part; not much physical projection left.

Delivery/Mechanics: Clean mechanics; throws from a ¾ arm slot; good deception; turns back so it’s facing hitter; some effort.

Fastball: Sits 95-97 t98; pitch has some run on it; uses it to completely overpower hitters; generates a lot of swings and misses; very hard for hitters to catch up to; struggles with command; most used offering; potentially a 7+ pitch if command improves. Grade: Present 7/Future 4+

Slider: Sits 79-81; good amount of movement; only used in two strike counts; struggles with control; rarely finds strike zone; swing and miss offering; needs to start using it more; potential to be a plus offering if control is improved. Grade: Present 5/ Future 6

Control/Command: Struggles with fastball command; misses up in the zone with fastball often; struggles with Slider control; rarely thrown for strikes.

Summary: A lot to like about him right now, including physical presence, overpowering fastball and slider that flashes plus; Weakness include fastball command, slider control, lack of off speed pitch use; never throws change-up; more advanced hitters will be able to catch up to fastball; will need to start incorporating more sliders and change-ups as he moves up organizational ladder in order to keep guys off balance.

Projection: Ceiling is second division closer; floor is solid set-up man; strong chance at being solid contributor on a Major League club; low risk.
