6/23 Power Rankings: Turnbull Heating Up

After a slow start to the season, right-hander Spencer Turnbull has been heating up for the West Michigan Whitecaps. Was his recent showing enough to pass Dixon Machado on the power rankings?

1. SS Dixon Machado - AAA Toledo
248 AB | .290 AVG | .733 OPS | 12 2B | 0 3B | 4 HR | 10 SB
Dixon Machado remained productive at the plate, going 6-for-22 (.273 AVG) with three walks, two doubles and a home run. The 23-year-old slick fielding shortstop also saw some time at third-base this past week, giving him added value for his likely future utility-infielder big league role. Machado is batting .296 with a .807 OPS over 81 at-bats this month.


2. RHP Joe Jimenez - A West Michigan
21 1/3 IP | 1.69 ERA | 0.84 WHIP | 1-Mar | 35 K | 6 BB | 6 SV
Joe Jimenez struck out two over three scoreless innings this past week. The 20-year-old right-hander hasn't allowed an earned-run since May 21st -- a span of ten innings. Jimenez has posted an impressive 14.5 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 over 21 1/3 innings.


3. RHP Spencer Turnbull - A West Michigan
57 1/3 IP | 2.67 ERA | 1.34 WHIP | 2-May | 49 K | 30 BB |
Spencer Turnbull threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing four hits and two walks, while striking out five. After a rather mediocre April, the 22-year-old right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 38 innings since May 1st.


4. RHP Paul Voelker - A+ Lakeland
36 IP | 2.00 ERA | 0.94 WHIP | 1-May | 45 K | 10 BB | 8 SV
Paul Voelker earned a win and a save over two appearances this past week. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed two earned-runs and struck out two over four innings.


5. OF Michael Gerber - A West Michigan
248 AB | .335 AVG | .881 OPS | 14 2B | 3 3B | 5 HR | 13 SB
Michael Gerber's slump continued this past week, as he went just 2-for-17 (.118 AVG). Despite hitting just .250 this month, the 22-year-old outfielder's .335 batting-average remains tops in the MidWest League and his .881 OPS is currently fifth best on the circuit.


6. OF Wynton Bernard - AA Erie
259 AB | .313 AVG | .757 OPS | 17 2B | 1 3B | 2 HR | 20 SB
Wynton Bernard went 9-for-24 (.375), with two more stolen bases this past week. The 24 year-old's name remains all over the Eastern League's leaderboard, including his 20 stolen bases (2nd), 17 doubles (5th) and .313 batting average (6th). Bernard is batting .325 with a .707 OPS over 80 at-bats this month.


7. RHP Tommy Collier - AA Erie
81 IP | 2.00 ERA | 1.10 WHIP | 4-Apr | 65 K | 20 BB |
Tommy Collier earns a spot on the power rankings after continued success after his promotion to Double-A Erie. The 25-year-old right-hander has a tidy 1.87 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 33 2/3 innings with the 'Wolves. Collier tossed eight innings allowing just one earned-run while striking out six this past week.


8. OF Ross Kivett - A West Michigan
265 AB | .303 AVG | .766 OPS | 21 2B | 1 3B | 3 HR | 16 SB
Ross Kivett cooled off a bit, going just 5-for-21 (.238 AVG) this past week. Kivett's limited contact was solid however, as the 23-year-old added three doubles and a homer since we last checked in. The former 6th rounder is batting .311 with a .804 OPS over 61 at-bats this month.


9. 3B Francisco Martinez - A+ Lakeland
238 AB | .273 AVG | .730 OPS | 13 2B | 4 3B | 5 HR | 13 SB
Francisco Martinez finds his way into the power rankings for the first time this season. Martinez is batting .429 with four doubles, a triple and two home runs over his last ten games. The 24-year-old third-baseman is batting .357 with a .955 OPS over 70 at-bats this month.


10. LHP Josh Turley - AA Erie
76 2/3 IP | 3.05 ERA | 1.29 WHIP | Jun-15 | 53 K | 24 BB |
Josh Turley is quietly putting together another impressive season, posting a 3.05 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 76 2/3 innings at Double-A Erie. The 24-year-old left-hander should be in-line for a promotion to Triple-A Toledo at some point this season.
