At the Park Scouting Report: Gabe Speier

A part of the trade last off-season that brought Yoenis Cespedes to the Tigers, Gabe Speier is an intriguing left-hander.

Name: Gabe Speier
Position: Pitcher
Date of Birth: 4/12/1995
Bats/Throws: Left/Left
Dates Observed: April, June, July 2015
Acquired: Trade with Boston, 2014

Body: (6’0”, 175) Appears accurate; not much physical projection remaining, but could add some strength.

Delivery/Mechanics: Delivery and mechanics are fluid, athletic and graceful; big wind up; brings leg bent up to chest and then fully extends it outward; throws from a ¾ arm slot; arm action is fast and looks easy; some effort in his delivery; not much deception in his delivery.

Fastball: Typically sits 90-92 t93 with his four seamer; four seamer has good life; 2 seamer is thrown around 87-88 with some serious arm-side run; currently has bad command; good control. Grade: Present 5+/Future 6

Curveball: Sits 77-79; good 1-7 movement; maintains arm speed well; misses up in the zone with it often leading to hard contact; has shown plus potential if command and consistency is improved. Grade: Present 5/ Future 6

Changeup: Sits 82-83; good deception; maintains arm speed well; ok movement; some mild fade; lacks command; currently and projects to be his worst pitch. Grade: Present 4/ Future 4+

Control/Command: Has shown decent to above average control every viewing; struggles with command on all of his pitches.

Other: Has shown very good ability to limit the running game against him; mixes a side step.

Summary: : An overlooked part of the Rick Porcello/Yoenis Cespedes trade last December, there is a ton to like about him right now; has shown the potential for a solid fastball, curveball and change-up mix; command needs some work; very interesting.

Projection: With improved command and consistency overall future potential is a seventh inning guy; floor is an organizational guy.
