9/1 Power Rankings: Ziomek Makes Climb

The Lakeland Flying Tigers' Kevin Ziomek rode a strong week to make a push up the power rankings. Was it enough to catch another red hot pitcher, Beau Burrows?

The weekly update factors both performance from the previous week of play and overall numbers. Only players currently in the minors will be eligible each week. 1. RHP Beau Burrows - Rookie / GCL

Beau Burrows, the Tigers 18-year-old first-rounder struck out six over three scoreless innings in his last start of the season. You can find video of Burrows' last start here: https://youtu.be/NMSRJa-r-bU . Burrows finishes the season with an impressive 1.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 33 strikeouts over 28 innings.

2. OF Wynton Bernard - AA Erie
505 AB | .299 AVG | .749 OPS | 25 2B | 7 3B | 4 HR | 40 SB
Wynton Bernard finished of the month of August batting .364 with a .904 OPS. Bernard's name can be found all over the Eastern League's batting leaders. His 40 stolen bases and seven triples lead the league, his 75 runs scored are second best, his .299 batting-average is seventh best and his 25 doubles are ninth best on the circuit.

3. LHP Kevin Ziomek - A+ Lakeland
148 2/3 IP | 3.51 ERA | 1.17 WHIP | 9-10 | 140 K | 34 BB |
Kevin Ziomek's impressive second half continued this past week as he picked up two more wins. The 23-year-old southpaw allowed just two earned-runs, while striking out 12 over 12 1/3 innings during the two start week. Ziomek has been Lakeland's most consistent starting pitcher in the second half, posting an impressive 2.59 ERA with 69 strikeouts over 76 1/3 innings. The Tigers former second-rounder also leads the Florida State League in strikeouts.

4. RHP Michael Fulmer - AA Erie
120 2/3 IP | 2.16 ERA | 1.07 WHIP | 10-3 | 121 K | 29 BB |
Michael Fulmer allowed four earned-runs off eight hits and a walk in his lone start this past week. The 22-year-old right-hander finished off the month of August with a 2.60 ERA over 27 2/3 innings. Fulmer boasts an impressive 2.16 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP, while striking out 121 over 120 2/3 innings this season.

5. OF Christin Stewart - A West Michigan
232 AB | .293 AVG | .899 OPS | 13 2B | 7 3B | 8 HR | 5 SB
Christin Stewart continues to be the 'Caps most consistent bat as they make their playoff push. Stewart finishes the month of August batting .317 with a 1.007 OPS over 101 at-bats. The 21 year-old outfielder is batting .298 with an .893 OPS over 45 games since his promotion to Class-A West Michigan.

6. RHP Tyler Alexander - SS Connecticut
34 IP | 0.79 ERA | 0.53 WHIP | 0-2 | 30 K | 5 BB |
Tyler Alexander scattered a hit and a walk over three clean innings, while striking out three. Opposing batters are hitting just .113 off Alexander, the Tigers recent second-rounder. The 21-year-old southpaw boasts an ridiculous 0.79 ERA and 0.53 WHIP with 30 strikeouts and just five walks over 34 innings with short-season Connecticut.

7. RHP Joe Jimenez - A West Michigan
41 IP | 1.54 ERA | 0.80 WHIP | 5-1 | 59 K | 11 BB | 16 SV
Joe Alexander finishes August with two wins, four saves, 13 strikeouts, one walk and a tidy 1.00 ERA over nine innings. The 20-year-old flame-thrower has been nearly untouchable since May 21st, boasting a 1.14 ERA with 41 strikeouts to just seven walks over 31 2/3 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .153 against Jimenez, and he's struck out a ridiculous 59 batters, while walking just 11 over 41 innings this season.

8. OF Jose Azocar - Rookie / GCL
217 AB | .300 AVG | .722 OPS | 11 2B | 5 3B | 0 HR | 6 SB
Jose Azocar finished the season strong, batting a ridiculous .411 while posting a .984 OPS over 95 at-bats in August. His .325 batting-average was 3rd best in GCL, and his .777 OPS was 8th best on the circuit. The 19-year-old center-fielder is raw, but he projects average potential across the board, with potential plus defense, giving him solid big-league potential.

9. SS A.J. Simcox - A West Michigan
174 AB | .310 AVG | .721 OPS | 6 2B | 1 3B | 1 HR | 10 SB
A.J. Simcox continues to swing a hot bat. The Tigers 14th rounder is batting .405 over his last ten games; and an impressive .373 with a .853 OPS since his promotion to Class-A West Michigan. The 21-year-old shortstop has a combined .310 batting average, a .721 OPS and ten stolen bases over 174 at-bats, across three levels.

10. RHP Spencer Turnbull - A West Michigan
110 IP | 3.19 ERA | 1.41 WHIP | 10-3 | 94 K | 50 BB |
Spencer Turnbull finds himself back in the power rankings after stringing together four impressive starts in the month of August. Over 21 2/3 innings last month Turnbull picked up two wins, posting a solid 2.91 ERA, while striking out 22 and walking just 5. Turnbull is 10-3 with a 3.19 ERA over 110 innings this season; he has not allowed a home run all season.
